Why choose the degree program in Process Engineering/what was the motivation?

At my school (Werner von Siemens Gymnasium Magdeburg), technical interest was encouraged, which is why I wanted to find a varied, technical and, above all, practical course of study, ideally offered in my hometown of Magdeburg. Thus the degree program in process engineering at the Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg was the ideal solution.

Why process engineering? What is exciting about process engineering?

In the field of process engineering, I am enticed by the interconnection of the natural sciences, which are separated and independently treated in school (due to the limited time available). In process engineering, there are various problems in which the individual disciplines have to be combined.

In addition, the study program offers a variety of possibilities in terms of an area of concentration. Especially during the master's degree, the majority of the lectures are selected by oneself and at least parts of the study can be designed according to one’s own taste. In addition, the required internships offer insight into industry and thus provide orientation aids for the subsequent area of concentration.

What is exciting about science?

I especially liked the autonomous solving of complex problems in scientific work. One must decompose these into subtasks, plan and evaluate one’s own tests, at the beginning develop "simple" models and then make these increasingly real - in this manner one experiences the (further) development of the overall project. Moreover, it is a certain stimulus to work on something that has probably never been done in this certain form or with this goal.

The exchange and collaboration with colleagues and cooperation partners offers the additional opportunity to adapt one’s own approach in terms of their experiences and in return support their projects with one’s own ideas, as well as become acquainted with further processes. Publishing work in various journals and presenting research results at conferences delivers direct feedback and can also lead to new ideas.

What is exciting about industry?

I am currently employed as a technologist in a mid-size chemistry company in the south of Saxony-Anhalt and deal with various tasks, such as the optimization of individual process steps, the analysis of process disturbances, or the planning of potential process extensions. At the beginning of my current occupation, I noticed that the multi-faceted education that was part of the degree program was very helpful in transitioning into the profession. Numerous engineering processes, which were also dealt with in the study program, are carried out in the local plant, such as, for example, reaction technology, crystallization, thermal and mechanical separation processes, as well as thermodynamics and combustion.

Can anyone do this?

Definitely! However, one should have a certain technical or scientific affinity. In return, the successful completion of the degree program offers a wide range of employment opportunities in various industries.
