“Science at City Hall” on 29 June 2015 “Active ingredient against Malaria: From Plant to Medicine”
The “Science at City Hall” series will be continued on Monday, 29 June 2015 starting at 19:00. The focus of the new episode is research for effective malaria drugs.
Speaker is Prof. Dr.-Ing. Andreas Seidel-Morgenstern, scientist at the Faculty of Process and Systems Engineering at the Otto-von-Guericke University and acting managing director of the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems in Magdeburg. Malaria is an infectious disease of the red blood cells, which is transmitted by the bite of the Anopheles mosquito. About 500 million people fall ill with malaria each year, and more than 1 million die from it. The World Health Organisation recommends a plant ingredient as the most effective antimalarial drug, which comes from the sweet wormwood plant, that grows in China and Vietnam. However, how does the active ingredient in the plant get into the drug?
The lecture series "Science at City Hall" was launched in September 2013. It is a joint project of the Magdeburg research institutions, the Municipal Adult Education Centre and the city administration. On the last Monday of each month Magdeburg scientists present their current research, switching their research laboratory and lecture halls to town hall. As such, current research topics from different scientific disciplines are illuminated that illustrate both the entire range as well as the priorities of the scientific center of Magdeburg.
Attendance at the event is free of charge.
