Why the decision to study Safety and Hazard Defense? What was the motivation?

It all began with an internship at the Hanover Professional Fire Brigade. After that, the decision to pursue a degree in Safety and Hazard Defense was clear. I liked the combination of natural and engineering sciences with a focus on safety.

What is exciting about Safety and Hazard Defense?

The advantage of the course of study is that an all-around view is given. You receive insight into a wide range of safety issues: from structural fire protection, explosion protection, accident and hazardous materials right up to psychosocial emergency care.

Can anyone do this?

At this point, yes. Due to the fact that the study program is offered jointly by the University and the University of Applied Sciences, no general qualification for university entrance (Abitur) is necessary. You just have to take part in an assessment test.

What do I do now (current employer):

I am currently still working at the Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences. I have researched the fire behavior of materials here, the quantification of which allows for an optimized interpretation of fire protection measures. As a result, I developed a methodology for the determination of the combustion efficiency factor of solids and wrote my doctoral thesis in this area.

Short company profile:

The university of applied sciences was founded in 1991. Students can choose from about 50 degree programs in three disciplines in Magdeburg as well as two disciplines at the Stendal location. There are around 130 professors with approximately 4,200 students in Magdeburg and 2,100 in Stendal. I work at the Department of Water, Environment, Construction, and Safety. It exists since October 2015 and was created by combining the two former areas of construction as well as water and recycling management.
