The FVST Mourns the Loss of Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Jürgen Tomas
The Faculty of Process and Systems Engineering mourns the loss Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Jürgen Tomas, who passed away 24 November 2015 at only 62 years of age. The FVST has lost an outstanding researcher, university teacher, and for many of us also friend. Our sympathies go out to his wife and family.
Born 1953 in Zerbst, Prof. Tomas studied process engineering (Process Systems Engineering) at the Technical University Merseburg from 1971 to 1975 before working as a research assistant at the Bergakademie Freiberg's Institute of Mechanical Process Engineering and Mineral Processing from 1975 to 1992; his specialty was bulk mechanics and engineering. In this time he was - in addition to earning his doctorate and habilitation - also an assistant professor at the University of Addis Abeba.
After an interim professorship and an appointment as professor at the HTWS in Zittau/Görlitz, Prof. Tomas took a position at the newly founded Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg in 1994 and has ever since held a position at the Department of Mechanical Process Engineering.
Highlighted here are in particular his long-term activities as speaker of the SFB 385 "Construction Materials Recycling", as coordinator of the DFG Priority Program 1486 "Particles in Contact – Micromechanics, Micro-Process Dynamics and Particle Populations" (PIKO), as well as speaker of the DFG Research Training Group 1554 "Micro-Macro Interactions in Structured Media and Particle Systems". He was a managing director of the Institute of Chemical Engineering several times, Dean of Faculty from 2007 to 2012, and full member of the Saxon Academy of Sciences since 2006, at which he held office as the Deputy Secretary of the Scientific Technology Class since 2012.
Throughout his scientific career Prof. Tomas released more than 250 publications and presented his and the results of his working group in several hundred lectures, mainly at international conferences. 20 doctoral and countless diploma, bachelor’s and master’s theses were created during this time in Magdeburg in his working group.
With Prof. Tomas University loses an excellent scientist and expert in the field of bulk and nanoparticle technology. We will evermore hold his memory with honor.
