Research News: Vaccines from the Reactor

13.03.2015 -

In case of the threat of a global pandemic brought on by the influenza virus, vaccine production could reach its limits, since the flu vaccine is still largely produced in embryonated chicken eggs.

Prof. Udo Reichl, Director at the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems, and head of the Bioprocess Engineering Department at the Otto-von-Guericke University Magdeburg, and his staff therefore are exploring a fully automated production in cell cultures, which is intended to provide a vaccine in large quantities in the event of a crisis.
